LATE CAMBRIAN-EARLY ORDOVICIAN ACRITARCHS FROM NORTHEASTERN BALTICA (BARENTS SEA, ARCTIC RUSSIA)

Large explored and potential oil and gas reserves on the Arctic shelf of Russia keep this territory in focus of permanent geological investigation. Although the geology of the Barents Sea, and especially of Kolguev Island,situated in its southern part, is well studied, there are still numerous questions which need to be clarified. Some decades ago, when more then 50 hydrocarbon prospecting boreholes penetrated the sedimentary cover on Kolguev Island, the first palaeontologically well-founded regional stratigraphic scheme of Palaeozoic sediments was established based on results of more than 30 specialists of different fossil groups (Preobrazhenskaya et al., 1995).
