Unstable Peri-articular Fractures of the Finger Treated with Low-profile Titanium Plate System

The purpose of this study was to review our experience with low profile titanium plate system for the treatment of 51 unstable peri-articular fractures of the finger. 15 fractures were open, and of these 6 had significant soft tissue injury. Location of plate was lateral in 33, dorsal in 17 and volar in 1. The average duration from injury to surgery was 8 days, and average follow-up period was 35 months. Bone union was successfully achieved in all patients, and final range of total active motion was excellent for 26; good for 17, fair for 5, and poor for 3. Postoperative complication occurred in five patients. Statistical analysis revealed that there was a significant correlation between the postoperative %TAM and age, and that definite difference was found between intra- and extra-articular fractures. Despite technical demands in plating for comminuted finger fractures, low profile titanium plate provides rigid fixation of unstable peri-articular fractures of the finger and permits postoperative early range of motion exercise.
