IMPACT DETECTION SYSTEM FOR FOAM CORE SANDWICH PANEL USING EMBEDDED FBG SENSORS

Impacts create internal damage in composite sandwich structures and this internal damage can cause severe reduction in strength. Therefore, the aim of this study is the impact identification of composite sandwich panels by using embedded FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensors. FBG sensors were embedded between the skin-core interface and strain response during impact was used to identify the impact location. Strain measurement system consists of a light source, FBG sensors, AWG (arrayed waveguide grating) filter and photo detectors. The accuracy of the system was demonstrated by indentation test using foam core sandwich panels with embedded FBG sensors. From the result, this system was able to measure strain accurately. Impact tests were then carried out and it was revealed that the impact location could be identified with a desired precision using this detection system.
