Mechanical Property of ABS Resin Molded at Room Temperature

A room temperature solvent casting (RTSC) treatment, that is solidification of articles after dissolving ABS plastics into acetone, is proposed. The attractive points are also saving the production period and cost on molding of polymer, as well as the casting at room temperature. Thus, influences of acetone, one of typical solvent in environmental closed system, on mechanical properties of ABS polymer treated by RTSC-treatment have been studied. The RTSC-treatment softens the ABS plastics. The softening is mainly caused by repulsive force of each segment of ABS molecule chain. The tensile and bending strength values of RTSC-treated sample are lower than that before the treatment. On the other hand,, the RTSC-treatment improves the Charpy impact value, which is larger than that before the RTSC-treatment. The reinforcement of impact value is mainly explained by annihilation of dangling bonds in ABS plastics.
