In this paper, we present an improved method for live streaming in the wireless environment over an overlay Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network. The key innovation is to pre-install the overlay P2P agent in wireless access points (APs), and to utilize a multicast protocol between the APs and client terminals. By this means, client terminals can obtain smoother video streams with less jitter. Experimental results indicate that this improvement is especially dramatic as more wireless terminals request video content. Wireless networks will soon experience much greater loading as more P2P content is shared, and especially as new video-enabled handheld wireless devices proliferate. Our experimental traffic simulations show that our methods can better utilize bandwidth and support more rapid service scalability.
