We used a mathematical model to simulate venous and lymphatic edemas and to compute the lowest external pressure required to prevent them. The levels of compression required to prevent ankle edema, as simulated with the model, are in reasonable agreement with clinical data. Despite limitations due to its very simple design, this model has the advantage that any combination of venous and lymphatic disturbances may be simulated, and the optimal counterpressure is easily computed.
