Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to simulate the flow and temperature distribution in various zinc pot geometries of a hot-dip galvanising line (HDGL#3) being designed at Coras in IJmuiden. In this research, worst-case operation conditions are assumed: the strip is operated at high speed with a strip entry temperature below the mean pot temperature. In the geometrical optimisation study, a 'base-case' geometry is compared to a geometry with a smaller depth and equal width (smaller volume), and a geometry with a smaller depth and larger width (equal volume). Decreasing the depth of the zinc pot leads to more dross contamination, whereas increasing the width partly reduces this unfavourable behaviour. It is concluded that a deep zinc pot exhibits the best flow conditions for minimising dross transport to the strip.
