This paper presents the basic principles of numerical modelling of high speed impact and penetration into concrete structures. The authors compare different types of discretisation (Euler, Lagrange, ALE and SPH). They underline the importance of an adequate material model. The conducted numerical parameter studies show the considerable influence of the mesh size ratio between impactor and concrete as well as of erosion and friction criteria on the velocity development of the impactor and on the damage of the concrete target. Important parameters for an adequate damage assessment are also the size of the numerical model and its boundary conditions.The SPH technique is a very promising approach to model damage effects like crack formation, spalling, scabbing and fragmentation.
