The Smart New Concept Passenger Module (S-NCPM) represents a novel passenger airbag module. This concept features a patented cushion layout which offers a high potential for the occupant protection in combination with a driver inflator. This layout is achieved by two lateral chambers and their connection via a membrane. With the driver inflator, a cushion volume of app. 65 liters is usually being filled. The innovative cushion design allows an increase in the operating volume to app. 90 liters. Thus, a very good protecting effect can be ensured also in case of high accident severities. This holds especially true for the Euro-NCAP crash. The advantages of this S-NCPM are the significantly smaller weight of the airbag module as well as the decreased required space in comparison to the conventional technology in an airbag module with a passenger inflator. Based on results from numerical simulation and tests performed, the restraint performance is being evaluated and compared with state-of-the-art concepts. Beside the protection potential of the S-NCPM, the performance under other basic conditions like "Out of Position" is being examined.
