Anode vessels are often relined with refractory every one to two years and a typical reline time can take between 16-20 days. Modern refractory designs using dense, corrosion resistant brick applied directly to the vessel shell in the high wear areas around and above the tuyeres and at the slagline can yield a lining life of up to 4-5 years before a complete reline is necessary. Installation methods using brick delivery on roller conveyors through an endwall access port and complete anchoring of the brick to allow for lining self-support can take days off the installation time. It is possible, therefore, to reduce the refractory relining period by 50 percent and increase lining life by 100 percent compared to typical anode repair schemes.
