The lobster fishery in Brazil started in the 1950s but developed considerably after the government introduced financial support and subsidies in 1967 to help development of the fishery sector. Since then it is one of the most important fisheries in the country and is fiindamentally oriented to the international markets. The annual average income for the period 1989-2005 was US$59.5 million, with a peak of US$81.4 million in 2005.
