Clinical Use of Botulinum Toxin in Spasticity Case Description: Severe Adverse Effect with the Use of the Chinese Botulinum Toxin - Prosigne~R

The use of botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of spasticity in neurological patients is widely discussed in the literature and acknowledged to be safe and effective. Adverse reactions in such cases are uncommon, and some of them are related with the formulations used. The various pharmacological preparations have different compositions and unique components, therefore they cannot be considered as generic. As the different formulations are approved in different countries it, is necessary the knowledge of the characteristics of with one of them. The present work outlines these characteristics and a case of severe adverse effect related with the use of the Chinese botulinum Chinese toxin (Prosigne~R) which contains bovine gelatin in its composition -the agent likely to induce the observed reaction.
