Effectiveness of Preoperative Brace Treatment in Congenital Anterolateral Bowing and Pseudarthrosis of the Tibia

To clarify the effectiveness of preoperative brace treatment for congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia and congenital anterolateral bowing of the tibia, we reviewed nine patients who were treated with PTB ankle foot orthosis from zero or one year of age until surgery. In three of the four patients with established pseudarthrosis of the tibia, atrophy of the bones at pseudarthrosis site never progressed before the operation at the age of five years. In the remaining five patients, fracture or deformity progression of the tibia was prevented during the observation period. Though the number of patients in this study is small, PTB ankle foot orthosis is effective as a conservative treatment until the definitive surgery is performed.
