This study investigated factors for aspiration in stroke patients by videofluoroscopy (VF), and food forms and details of guidance were examined according to the factors. Subjects were 90 patients with cerebral strokes aged between 34approx101 years (74.8+-12.6 years) including 61 males and 29 females. VF was performed for swallowing difficulty or suspected swallowing difficulty. On VF, aspiration with foodstuffs was found in 54 of 90 patients, and silent aspiration (SA) was found in 40 of them. Some patients took food orally in spite of SA on VF. Most patients can keep eating after they were given instructions for contents of diet, and intake methods based on the results of VF. On swallowing training, direct training could be conducted in few patients in the group that presented overt aspiration in this study. If cases were approached with appropriate foodstuffs and eating method on the basis of VF, eating is possible without aspiration in many cases.
