LIQUEFACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF INDUSTRIAL WASTE FILL MATERIALS

Industrial wastes have generally been disposed mainly as landfill. In recent years, they are also used for marine reclamation although in fewer cases. Marine reclamation makes the disposal of large quantities of industrial wastes possible. Japan is more prone to earthquakes and has experienced many serious earthquake disasters. Not a few of those earthquake disasters were caused by the liquefaction of reclaimed land. In this study, cyclic triaxial test, were conducted to investigate the liquefaction characteristics of land filled with various types of wastes for finding possible problems during an earthquake as marine reclamation using industrial wastes is increasing. It has been found that coal ash is more prone to liquefaction than Toyoura sand and that the sludge generated at water treatment plants is less susceptible to liquefaction than Toyoura sand. Mixing the waste with about 10% clay fractions such as bentonite proved to be highly effective for controlling liquefaction potential.
