The determination of soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) is very important for the study of unsaturated soil and is also very complex. The SWCC is influenced by factors, such as the substance constitution, plasticity index, pore structure and stress state of soil, etc. SWCC can be related to the grain size distribution and permeability of soil. The influencing factors and relationships are studied in this paper. Based on the studies, the fundamental properties of SWCC have been analyzed and some formulas are proposed to describe the water retention properties of soil. Then the hysteresis of SWCC has been discussed.
