Many unsaturated soil tests were performed using compacted samples and most verification of constitutive models for unsaturated soils were made using the test results of unsaturated compacted soils.Real unsaturated soils are not only unsaturated compacted soils and some of them should be simulated more reasonably by unsaturated pre-consolidated samples. Up to now, a few tests were performed using preconsolidated samples to study the mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils. In order to have a good understanding of the mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils, it is necessary to compare the mechanical behaviour of unsaturated compacted samples with the behaviour of pre-consolidated samples. In this paper, a comparative study is made by performing a series of triaxial tests on two kinds of unsaturated soil specimens.
