The inter-diffusion behavior in base-metal-electrode X7R type and Y5V type multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) were studied respectively. The microstructure and diffusion phenomenon between dielectric layers and internal electrode layer (Ni) were investigated and analysis be SEM, TEM, HRTEM and EDS. It was found that there are two transition regions at both side of interface that are considered to be induced by the interdiffusion between the Ni layers and BaTiO{sub}3 layers during cofiring. The experimental results also showed that the diffusion capability of Ni diffusing into the ceramic layers is stronger than that of BaTiO{sub}3 diffusing into Ni layers. The mechanism of interdiffusion in MLCCs was also discussed.
