Factors Predicting the Success of In-vitro Maturation (IVM)

Research into the maturation of oocytes goes back to 1935 when Pincus and Enzman (1) showed that mammalian oocytes removed from their follicle spontaneously resumed meiosis. Although Edwards et al. (2) described in-vitro maturation (IVM) of human oocytes, it was not until 1991 when this procedure was incorporated as a treatment for human infertility. Cha et al. (3) reported that human oocytes harvested from unstimulated ovaries during a gynecological operation were matured in-vitro and fertilized. Five embryos were then transferred to a woman with premature ovarian failure, who subsequently delivered healthy triplet girls.
