The effect of temper rolling prior to hot band annealing on the development of Goss texture during primary recrystallization in grain-oriented electrical steel sheet was studied. In order to investigate the possibility of Goss texture formation in subsurface layer, the temper rolling reduction was changed in the range of 0% to 9%. In the specimen temper rolled by 6% and hot band annealing at 1000°C, relatively Goss texture developed and grain growth induced by temper rolling occurred most efficiently in sub-surface layer. The formation of Goss texture during the primary recrystallization annealing after 89% cold rolling was influenced by the microstructure and the Goss texture in the sub-surface layer of hot band annealed sample.
