Isolation of a Yeast Strain for Hiht Effective Degradation of Phenol and Its Characterization for Degradading of Phenolic Compounds

A yeast strain was isolated from the infall of the sewage plant of Shanghai refinery. Itcould utilize high concentration of 1 500 ppm phenol as the only carbon and energy resourceand was named 10-6. According to morphological, physiological and its 26 s RNA gene sequence, the strain was identified as Candida maltosa. In order to testify the degrading ability of the strain,five different concentration phenolfrom 500 ppm to 1 500 ppm as the only carbon source were tested. The result shows strain10-6 has a strong capacity in degradation of phenol and can totally degrade a high concentration of phenol up to 1 500 ppm. 1 000 ppm phenol can be degraded within 48 hours. It will bedegraded slowly by increase of the phenol concentration. And the retarded time is in the direct ratio with the concentration of phenol.
