Paddy soil is submerged under water during the growing season of rice. The plow layerbecomes anaerobic under water except for the aerobic soil surface. Studies have shown thatanaerobic bio-reaction plays an important role in the fate of synthesized organic chemicalssuch as agrochemicals in paddy soil. However, only poor information has been available onthe microorganisms associated with the anaerobic degradation of chemicals. In this paper,characterization of three anaerobic microbial consortia are reviewed, which were associatedwith the biodegradation of persistent organic chemicals,pentachlorophenol(PCP) ,polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) ,and alkylphenols in paddy soil.
