Magnesium sheet is increasingly being considered as a potential enabler for light-weighting of automotive body structures. In this paper, magnesium AZ31 sheet alloys from three different sources, two DC (Direct-Chill) and one CC (Continuous-strip Cast), were assessed for elevated temperature formability by tensile testing. Both monotonic and step-strain-rate-change tensile tests were conducted at several different temperatures and strain rates. The paper discusses the relationship between initial sheet microstructure and tensile deformation behavior in terms of ductility to failure and strainrate sensitivity of flow stress. The DC and the CC alloys exhibit very different deformation behaviors, suggesting that microstructural features in addition to the initial grain size are influential.
