Iron ores containing Tin and Zinc are typically complex and it is difficult to separate the Iron from these ores. However, large reserves of these ores are found in China and have lot of potential as new sources for Iron production. At present these ores remain underutilized due to the complexities involved in physically separating the elements from the ores. In this research, a novel "one-step" coal-based direct reduction process designed to enrich the iron content is examined. Thermodynamic analysis of iron, tin and zinc oxide by CO reduction is carried out. Metallized pellets are prepared from the complex iron concentrates containing 0.30% Sn, 0.21% Zn and 65.42% Fe (wt %). Under the optimal conditions, metallized pellets with 94.68% metallization of Fe are obtained. The residual contents of tin and zinc in the metallized pellets are found to be less than 0.07% (wt %). The finished pellets can serve as high quality steelmaking burdens for electric arc furnaces (EAF).
