This paper examines and re-calibrates the liquefaction potential index (I_L) originally proposed by Iwasaki et al. The re-calibration is conducted using CPT measurements at 154 sites. Both factor of safety (FS) and probability of liquefaction (P_L) are considered in the calculation of I_L. Using P_L, instead of FS, yields more consistent I_L values. Based on the results, the interpretation of I_L is established. An empirical method for estimating probability of the occurrence of significant liquefaction effect is also established using Bayes's theorem and the distributions of I_L values for the case histories examined.
