Automotive transmissions are getting more and more diverse. The last decade, after a long period of more or less standard solutions, new concepts like DCT, CVT, and AMT, have entered the market and are now justifying their existence in various segments. With ever growing numbers and recently surpassing 20 Million applications in the market, CVT is able to fulfill the ever stronger customer's demands regarding cost and fuel consumption. Bosch Transmission Technology B.V. has proven this potential by a concept study in hardware, which is described in this paper. The new benchmark is enabled through a complete technology work-over by an innovative belt-variator, new hydraulic lay-out and smart control logic. The measures result in a weight & size reduction of 10-15% and a fuel economy improvement of 7% comparing to the current generation. The improvements in fuel economy as well as the superior comfort and drivability in inner city and condensed traffic situations make CVT the right choice for today's growing urban areas all over the world.
