Innovative Powershift Modules for AMT in various vehicle segments

The transmission plays a key role in improving a vehicle's comfort, fuel efficiency and performance. Nowadays, the most fuel efficient transmission is the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). However, this transmission type is not competitive in shifting comfort when compared to planetary automatic transmissions. To overcome this drawback, a second power-shifting clutch can be integrated into the transmission. The Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is a well-known example of integrating two clutches with automated shifting technology. In this paper various powershift concepts are surveyed and compared on different aspects. One of these concepts is the novel Powershift AMT which is developed by Drivetrain Innovations. This add-on module can be integrated in a standard AMT. Furthermore, the paper gives a technical description of the Powershift AMT system and presents simulation results which illustrate the improved shift comfort, acceleration performance and fuel economy. Next, the added values for the manufacturers and customers are discussed.
