Transfield Services' Electrical Mechanical Power Services group provides maintenance services to electricity utilities in New Zealand. Part of this service includes an after hours fault response, whereby the person "on call" can be contacted to respond to problems that occur mainly in substations. This person can travel significant distances and attend to problems in a live electricity environment by himself. Only if the problem is found to be extensive or more complex is a second person called out. It has been a concern for Transfield management for some time that there has not been a satisfactory means of monitoring the wellbeing of the after hours lone worker. This paper introduces the option that has been recently developed using a combination of technologies to meet the complex needs of the Transfield environment. The application of this technology has enhanced our ability to "take all practicable steps" to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff called out after hours.
