The use of tinted undercoats to compensate for low opacity topcoats is well established in the paint industry, but there is little agreement on how the undercoat should be selected. Tinting the undercoat to a similar colour as the topcoat would be helpful for colours tinted into white bases. However the high tint strength of most undercoats will allow the matching of only a small range of pastel shades which generally do not have opacity problems. Also, it is impractical to specify a different undercoat colour for every topcoat shade. This approach would not work for topcoats from coloured or clear bases which are strongly represented in the poor opacity groups.
