The European directive (2004/42/EG) that restricts the use of organic solvents in paints will have a large impact on the formulation of colorants for tinting systems even though these colorants were not specifically mentioned in the directive. In some categories, like for example ready-to-use coloured wall-paints for the interior, the maximum amount of organic solvent must be reduced to 30 gram/litre. This amount is exceeded in paints made by most of the current tinting systems, which makes these unsuitable after 2010. This is a problem, especially when realizing that nowadays nearly half of the decorative paints is coloured in the paint stores by means of small-scale tinting systems and this amount will grow steadily over the next few years due to the increasing popularity of coloured interiors.
