Long-term performance of high durability coatings can be measured in terms of colour and gloss change during exposure studies. Colour choice is made for fashion, branding or safety reasons and pigment chemistry is chosen to provide a balance between cost and durability. The relationship between pigment chemistry and durability is often well known, but is re-examined in the work presented. New research to engineer pigments in order to manipulate gloss retention and weathering has led to the development of new high performance organic pigments that provide durability improvements. These pigments, based upon benzimidazolone chemistry, have been tested in a range of polymer systems and have provided significant increases in single coat gloss retention and weathering performance.
