So what is the best solution? We would submit that a combination platform that supports both Point-to-Point and RPR technologies offers the best cost and performance. The high bandwidth feeds from the venues and to the Uplinks can be best addressed by Point-to-Point links at minimal cost without the need for the RPR overhead. RPR is ideal for the Inter-facility Ring where multiple services are delivered in a multicast fashion to the various locations. The platform should offer a variety of video (SDI and ASI) and Ethernet (GbE and FE) inputs to accommodate varying traffic types and allow for efficient statistical multiplexing of the services. Finally, it is important that the platform offer the ability to compress video feeds such that leased circuits and network bandwidth can be used as efficiently as possible.
