Traditional Hausa architecture is a developed urban style, the Sudanese style, which is known for its architectural and structural systems as well as for its intricate wall designs, which are highly stylized and avoid the representation of living forms, in keeping with Islamic traditions. The art of earth wall designs is currently undergoing an evolution as a result of changes occasioned by industrialization in the area. The traditional systems are experiencing a radical change, and there is a real danger that the traditional decorative art may be gradually dying out along with the master craftsmen who practiced it. In spite of the challenges of change, death, and modernity, there are remarkable efforts across Hausaland to preserve the rich architectural and decorative motifs of the earth buildings across the area. These conservation efforts are brought to bear through the perpetuation of the annual traditional practice of maintenance, thus, it is hoped, ensuring the continuity of the cultural expression of earth wall decorations.
