In this paper RAPINSPECT samples are examined. In the first part, mild steel weld samples from the RAPINSPECT project are inspected using ultrasonic arrays with full raw data (FRD) capture. Moreover, the relevance of the compounding technique, involving reflections from the back face, in this complex inspection is discussed. An alternative way to improve resolution and access all parts of a weld, is to image directly through the weld cap and then apply adaptive processing by using independent element focal laws to compensate for phase distortion. In the second part of the paper, a steel RAPINSPECT specimen containing two identical side-drilled holes, one as a reference below the flat surface and the second hole as a point reflector below the complex weld cap geometry, is assessed by simulation using ray tracing software. The results show the ability to defect defects in different parts of the weld using dynamic focusing with FRD capture.
