Functional refractory elements like sliding gates and nozzles as well as brick are often made of costly raw materials even though only the surface which gets into contact with the steel needs to be of such high-quality material. Using two materials in a sandwich layer therefore can decrease cost in a very effective and efficient way. Some refractory companies are known to manufacture such products by using two separate pieces, mounted together after pressing and sintering. Others use a manual filling procedure to press these elements in one piece. Both methods are time and labour intensive and are thus still expensive. The author describes a method for an automated filling and pressing of double layered products, exemplified by the process of pressing a sliding gate. By using a high performance hydraulic press the cycle time increases only by approx. 10 sec. compared to a single filling process. This technology will make highly resistant wear elements available at a most competitive price.
