The trend towards continuously increasing sizes and capacities in the production equipment generally observed in the iron and steel industry during the last century is also found to be true for heat treatment furnaces and sinter furnaces. As a result of the demand of larger and larger work pieces under increasing well defined conditions to heat treatment in order to obtain exactly prescribed properties[1], existing type of furnaces have been further improved with respect to furnace refractory lining and furnace proper. All over the world, recent trend of lining of heat treatment furnaces is to use as maximum as possible the monolithic lining. With the advent of low moisture, ultra low moisture and self flow castable people have shifted towards the use of these developed masses in heat treatment furnaces because of the improved properties over conventional castable. In India also, castable refractories are used regularly in all heat treatment furnaces.
