A dynamic vacuum calcination method was employed to investigate the effect of atmosphere on the solid-state reactions between rutile TiO{sub}2 and BaCO{sub}3 powders to prepare sub-micron BaTiO{sub}3 particles. The kinetic behavior of the calcination reaction was found to be sensitive to the pressure, nature and composition of the prevailing atmosphere and, in particular, to the availability and ease of removal of CO{sub}2. The results give evidence of differences in reaction pathways by varying the total reaction pressure.
