Carburization Issues In Black Liquor Steam Reforming/Gasification

Gasification of black liquor and other biomass offers a means to produce a syngas that can be used for a variety of purposes such as a fuel for direct use in burners or, after cleaning, as fuel for gas turbines and as feedstock for production of chemicals like ethanol. In North America, there are systems currently operating at three paper mills to steam reform or gasify the black liquor produced at these mills. Although all these systems are operating with some reasonable level of success, there are issues with degradation of components in all three systems. Two of these systems utilize the "low-temperature" steam reforming process and have encountered unexpected carburization issues. Components exposed in these systems have been examined, and laboratory experiments have been conducted in environments designed to simulate the conditions in the operating steam reformers. Results of the corrosion studies identified alloys that are more resistant to carburization under the simulated conditions.
