Build-up and clogging caused by alumina inclusions occurs in the refractories used in the continuous casting of aluminum killed carbon and stainless steel. The alumina build-up forms defects in the steel and can decrease productivity. Trials of Doloma based refractories have been conducted in the continuous casting of various steel grades that are prone to clogging by alumina. Doloma graphite SENs and fired doloma tundish nozzles have been shown to be effective at preventing build-up due to alumina. Alumina inclusions react with the lime based doloma and form low melting calcium aluminates that do not adhere to the refractory surface. This paper will discuss the application and properties of the doloma refractories that have been used in the continuous casting of steel grades prone to alumina clogging.
