Chapter 2. Linkages between the Agro-food Sector and the Rural Economy

Agriculture is also mdirectly linked through revenue and spending relations. Farm income and spending provide a complementary indirect link to non-farm sectors. The more farmers earn, the more they spend on other sectors' outputs. The rest of the indirect links are competitive. The more people and governments spend on food or fibre or farm subsidies, the less there is to spend on non-farm goods, services, or income support. Because of all these direct and indirect linkages, changes to farm policy affects land use, income, employment and government budgets in the non-farm economy.
