THE COLOUR OF THE CANADIAN FLAG

The Canadian flag was introduced in 1965amid great controversy. When the flags were found to fade rapidly in normal use, this only increased the controversy. The National Research Council (NRC) was called in to recommend more stable dyes and to define the desired colour. NRC defined the colour by specifying the CIE coordinates of two limit standards, one light orange and the other dark red. In 1972 the specifications were modified to take into account new CIE recommendations on colorimetry. The specification was also reformulated as a single target colour with tolerances. The complete specification is published as a national standard.
