Manufacturing is the business of creating value by delivering solutions to customers through tangible products. As such, manufacturing is in the midst of a transformation - a value revolution. Value is no longer created simply in the production process, but derived from the knowledge, innovation, and service embodied throughout the entire life cycle of products and their relationship with customers. Next Generation Manufacturing must be understood as a complex and dynamic system of continuous innovation - where innovation is conceived as new and improved ways of creating value by solving customer and business problems in an economically viable (competitive and profitable) way.
