This paper illustrates the mechanisms of applying phase change material (PCM) wallboard combined with controlled night ventilation to improve the indoor thermal performance of offices in summer. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of PCM wallboard on thermal performance of a room with night ventilation numerically, and to provide a method of designing the PCM wallboard and night ventilation. The paper develops a theoretical model for analyzing the thermal performance of PCM wallboard rooms combined with controlled night ventilation in summer, and defines two new parameters (I_(DC) and I_(DCT)) for describing the overheating degree, with which to evaluate the potential of controlled night ventilation in PCM wallboard rooms. The method of optimizing the design of PCM wallboard and night ventilation is discussed by the example of a 5mx5m office in Yining in China. The result shows that PCM wallboard can improve the indoor thermal comfort degree in non-air-conditioned buildings in some regions. The study is useful for designing more effective PCM wall for passive energy storage.
