Landfill Site Selection for Municipal Solid Waste for Pune City Using Remote Sensing and GIS

Pune city is located between longitudes 73~0 45' - 73~0 58'E, and latitudes 18~0 37' - 18~0 26'N. The city has an estimated population of 30,25,000 in 2004. Municipal Solid Waste Management has become serious concern for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and citizens in the city, because of the rapid growth of population, urbanization and industrialization. This project is an attempt to find the best suitable site for the disposal of Municipal Solid waste (MSW) in Pune city. Total PMC area is 237.04 sq.km. About 1325-1465 metric tons of waste is generated per day. PMC has the necessary infrastructure for collection, storage, segregation, transportation and disposal. But the present Municipal Solid Waste disposal site located at Urli Devachi village is not able to accommodate the huge quantities of waste. There have been problems of leachate percolation, landfill fires, odor & litter. The present study evaluates the available disposal sites taking into consideration criteria for site selection, topology, geology, hydrology, land use etc. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing have been used for the evaluation of alternative site for the disposal of Municipal Solid Waste .The study area is the Pune Municipal Corporation limits and a buffer zone of ten kilometers around the PMC limits. Thematic layers like land use, transportation, geology, forest cover, drainage network, contours, slope, geomorphology, soil properties, road network were prepared in GIS environment. Buffer zones are added to layers like roads, settlements, water bodies and airport as per the guidelines given in the Manual on Municipal Solid Waste management, May 2000. PAN sharpened LISS image is used for the supervised digital classification of the image. Slope classes have been prepared from TIN and all the layers have been overlaid in GIS environment. Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA) integrated with GIS database is used to select the best-suited sites. In Multi Criteria Analysis, Multiple Attribute Decision-Making model (MADM) is used. Study shows that there is a site of 75 hectares near Vadachiwadi and Yelvewadi in the south of PMC, which is a stone quarry area with road accessibility. There is also an area of 67 hectares near Badkewadi in the west of PMC, with road accessibility.
