A Study on the Reduction of Hexavalent Chromium in Chromium-containing Slag by an Industrial Waste

A new way to treat and dispose chromium slag was proposed in this paper. M slag, a very cheap industrial waste, was selected as a reductant. The carbon remained in M slag was used to reduce Na<,2> CrO<,4> and detoxify chromium slag at high temperature. Thermodynamics of reaction process was discussed. The activity values of CrO<,4><'2-> in reaction slag and in equilibrium state were calculated by using the Temkin model. Experimental results confirmed that the concentration of leached Cr(VI) was 0.063mg/L, lower than the GB5085.3-1996 limits of 1.5mg/L. The reacted mass ratio of CrO<,4> <'2-> was 99.991%, very closing to 99.998% in thermodynamic theory. With the proposed simple method, completive detoxification of chromium slag by another industrial waste can be performed.
