STUDY ON THE CONTENT OF CHEMICALS IN LANDFILL LEACHATE

The nature of landfill leachate depends on the type of the wastes at the disposal site, the landfilling technique used, the waste degradability and their stage of degradation as well as of the climate. The aim of our investigation was to characterize the leachate from the landfill situated near by a town with 85,000 inhabitants. Samples were taken and then analyzed from three points: from the recultivated cell, from the cell under filling as well as from the mixed leachate of both cells. The common characteristics like pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), total nitrogen, organic nitrogen, [NH_4~+-N], [NO_2~--N], [NO_3~--N], total phosphorus, phosphates, suspended solids (SS), dissolved solids DS (total and organic fraction), electroconductivity, have been determined. The metals content has been studied using Emission Spectral Analysis and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The values for DO, COD and BOD showed that the biodegradable components in the leachate are increasing and the anaerobic degradation in the waste body is in progress. During the period from March, 2003, till earlier 2004 the values for conductivity reached their maximum because of the increased quantity of the dissociated into water compounds. At the same time pH is decreased. The inorganic fraction in the DS is higher compared to that of organics. Dissolved organics in the leachate wasted from the operating cell are much more than that from the recultivated cell. The presence of B, Al, Si, Cu, Mn, Fe, Zn, Ti, Cr, P and Bi was detected to be negligible. It was established that the quantity of Na, K, Mg and Ca is significant. Ni, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sn, Sb were not found.
