ACTIVITIES ON PRESERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF FARM ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES IN SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

The SAM occupies total area of 102,173 m～2 and true the last census have about 8.000.000 people. In SAM, in all the branches of animal production, there are two types of production systems: a highly specialized high input production system and an extensive low input production system based on the combined crop/animal farming. Cattle, pig, poultry and sheep production were predominant. The most significant livestock products in SAM are: milk and dairy products, pork, beef, poultry meat, eggs, lamb, liquid manure, wool, skin, giblets and manufactured products. Organized work on management of AnGR was started at the 1994. years, with the identification of all breeds. The data are sent to FAO central data base in Rome: 8 breeds of cattle, 3 breeds of goats, 7 breeds of horses, 18 breeds of pigs, 5 breeds and 7 strains of sheep and 3 breeds of poultry. Organisation network on preservation and management of AnGR includes: 1. Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management -Department for genetic resources, 2. Extension services, 3. Agriculture Faculties and Livestock Institutes, 4. Breeders Associations 5. NGO's etc.
