Changes in farming practice over the past two decades have had an effect on the distribution and abundance of farmland wildlife. The ecosystem of a combinable crop is highly complex, with over 500 different species of arthropods having been recorded,many of which are considered to be beneficial. This paper highlights the role of beneficial arthropods (beneficials) in oilseed rape and discusses integrated management using tau-fluvalinate ('MavrikEW'). Insects and other arthropod groups may be beneficial to oilseed rape in a variety of ways, as pollinators, parasitoids of pests, as predators of pests or as fungal feeders (i.e. grazers of fungi harmful to crops). Species of aesthetic or conservation value also occur in oilseed rape (e.g. butterflies).For the purpose of this paper, beneficial arthropods are considered to be those which have an impact on crop pests, potentially reducing pest populations below damaging threshold numbers: namely, parasitoids and predators. Some examples of beneficials in oilseed rape crops are given in Table 1.
