A number of important wireless data communications technologies are emerging for utility applications. Specifically, 802.11 (WiFi), 802.16 (WiMAX), and 700 MHz technologies-hold meaningful potential for utility data applications such as Substation Automation, SCADA, Mobile Computing, Metering, and D.A. New wireless communication technologies coupled with IP-ready field equipment will have a major impact on how many utilities operate and maintain their systems. Efficiencies and capabilities pursued by utilities for years and only partially achieved are becoming increasingly possible every day-technically and financially. With rapidly evolving communication technologies, it is increasingly challenging to keep pace, to ensure that investments and decisions being made/planned today do not overlook new alternatives and designs.
