Wet FGD Additive for Enhanced Mercury Control

This paper presents results from a project co-sponsored by DOE-NETL, EPRI, TXU Power, Southern Company, AES and Degussa Corporation, to field test the use of Degussa additive TMT-15 in wet FGD systems to prevent mercury re-emissions and to precipitate mercury as a stable salt. Pilot-scale FGD additive tests were conducted at TXU Power's lignite/PRB-blend-fired Monticello Station and at Georgia Power's Plant Yates, which fires low-sulfur Eastern bituminous coal. Full-scale tests are also being conducted at AES' Indianapolis Power and Light Petersburg Station and at Plant Yates. During each test, speciated mercury removal is measured across the FGD absorber using a mercury semi-continuous emission monitor (SCEM). For most tests, the relative accuracy of the SCEM data are being measured by the Ontario Hydro method. Other results include mercury mass balances around the wet FGD systems, determining the ability to size separate mercury-TMT salts from the FGD byproducts, and determining the stability of mercury in these salts. This paper covers only the Monticello pilot-scale results. At the time of the presentation, the Petersburg full-scale test will have been completed and those results should be available.
